International Pilot Module 2 Coordination Meeting

The International Coordination meeting for the joint execution of Pilot Module 2 “Technology and knowledge transfer for rural energisation with renewable energies” was held in the Bolivian Catholic University from 22nd to 25th of November, with the participation of the partners of Germany (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences) and Brazil (Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina). The meeting was aimed to present the concepts for the local implementation of Pilot Module 2 in each country, to coordinate the further cooperation and to transfer knowledge between the JELARE partners for the optimisation of the Pilot Module execution. The first day was used for an internal meeting of the partners to exchange details about the individual Pilot Module concepts and to plan the further joint activities. Prof. Timon Kampschulte from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences presented the “Solar Home System training stand” which will be constructed by students of the RE Masters Programme of the university and will be used in the future for the training of students in the use, operation and maintence of Solar Home Systems for rural electrification in developing countries. Prof. Baltazar D’Andrade Guerra and Prof. Rodrigo Althoff from Unisul from Brazil presented their concept of a prototype of an automated photovoltaic system which will be implemented at their university campus for capacity building and research purposes. Finally, Franziska Buch, project manager of the JELARE project at Bolivian Catholic University presented the Renewable Energy Technology Demonstration Centre which will is currently being implemented at the Rural Academic Unit (UAC) of Batallas which forms part of the Bolivian Catholic University. The Demonstration Centre has different objectives of education, capacity building, technology transfer and dissemination of renewable energies in rural areas. The centre will be used on the one hand by the UAC to modernise the study programme of Agroindustry, introducing a new module of “Renewable Energy Technologies for Agriculture and Food Production” into the curriculum. On the other hand, the centre will serve the Bolivian Catholic University as an external laboratory for engineering students, as the introduction of a Bachelor and a Postgraduate Programme in (Renewable) Energy in the university is planned. Furthermore, the Centre will be used for capacity building seminar in “Use, Operation and Maintenance of Solar Home Systems” for municipal technicians which will be carried out in the Rural Academic Unit. Finally, a further purpose of the centre is the dissemination of knowledge about renewable energy technologies in rural areas, which will be part of the action as many of the students of the rural entity come themselves from rural areas, so they will transfer their knowledge to their communities.

The scheme below shows the already existing installations in the Rural Academic Unit such as greenhouses, rooms for education and food production as well as buildings for livestock. The numbers from 1 to 8 show the places where the RE demonstration systems are installed:

It is important to emphasise that all these systems are integrated into the “Educational Farm” of the Rural Academic Unit which is used by the Agroindustry students for their exercises. All the RE systems will be in constant real use, but on the same time they will serve for educational and demonstrative purposes, with an explanatory banner installed together with each system.

The second day of the coordination meeting was used for a site visit at the Rural Academic Unit where the installations of the Renewable Energy Technology Demonstration Centre were going on. The international visitors had the opportunity to see most of the systems and to get a holistic idea of the future use of the Centre. The official inauguration of the Centre will be in February 2011.

The third day of the international meeting served the partners to advance in the elaboration of agreements for student exchange between the three universities, specifically in the Engineering Study Programmes. On the last day of the meeting, the international networking seminar “International perspectives on electrification with renewable energies” was held (see below).
