Inauguration of the Renewable Energy Technology Demonstration Centre

On 8th April 2011, the Renewable Energy Technology Demonstration Centre which has been implemented by the Bolivian Catholic University in the frame of Pilot Module 2 “Technology and Knowledge Transfer for Rural Energisation with Renewable Energies” has been officially inaugurated at the Rural Academic Unit in Batallas, about two hours travel from the city of La Paz in the Bolivian Highlands.

The inauguration event was attended by over 150 guests from ministries, embassies, international cooperation, NGOs and universities. Part of the programme were speeches of the authorities of the Bolivian Catholic University and the Rural Academic Unit of Batallas as well as a speech by the Bolivian Minister of Rural Development, Nemesia Achacollo. After this, the participants were brought to the RE Technology Demonstration Centre where staff of the JELARE team was placed at each Renewable Energy System to explain the visitors their functioning. Finally, Ivo Hoefkens from the Delegation of the European Union in Bolivia, closed the event. He expressed his satisfaction with this initiative which already has and will have for renewable energy education and diffusion and local socio-economic development in the poor Bolivian altiplano.

One month after the event, already 50 students from the engineering faculty of the Bolivian Catholic University, have visited the Centre with their professors and it is expected that another 150 students from different universities will go to the RE Demonstration Centre during the current university semester. In the second week of June, a three-day capacity building seminar for municipal technicians in “Operation and Maintenance of Photovoltaic Systems” will be carried out and another capacity building for community members to build their own solar cooking stove is foreseen. Several local organizations have already approached the Bolivian JELARE team after the inauguration in order to establish cooperation agreements to further exploit the possibilities of the RE Demonstration Centre.
