JELARE Workshop for integration in the German-Brazilian year of Science, Technology and Innovation

The JELARE Seminar about the Brazil-Germany year of science, technology and innovation, took place in Florianopolis, on July 5th, 2010. The Seminar was an initiative of Project JELARE aiming to encourage the transfer of knowledge and technology, on the area of renewable energy, between Brazil and Germany and to encourage partnerships between academies and organizations in these countries.

The seminar was opened by Professor Claus-Dieter Wacker, Dean of the University of Applied Sciences of Hamburg (HAW). Professor Youssef Ahmad Youssef JELARE supervisor in the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (UNISUL) Brazil, made an analysis of the energetic sector in Brazil. Professor Walter Leal, from the University of Applied Sciences of Hamburg (HAW), Germany, general supervisor of the project, held a retrospective of the renewable energy in Germany, noting that the increased demand for renewable energy takes place not only for environmental reasons, but also economically. He stressed that the gradual substitution of fossil fuels by others from renewable raw materials has already generated savings of 500 billion euros. "The initial cost should not inhibit actions, because the return in the medium and long term is worth it," argues the professor.

Three Professors from UNISUL showed the research in the area of bio-fuels: Professor Anelise Leal Vieira Cubas (UNISUL) present the technologies to develop a thermal plasma reactor – and its use to the disposal of solid waste.

On ethanol, Professor Rachel Faverzani Magnago highlighted the importance of developing technologies for improving the process. "When the government program of support began, some two decades, a tonne of sugarcane produces 50 liters of bio-fuel. Today, the same amount of raw materials results in 80 liters, with investments made in recent years to develop new procedures and innovations both in agriculture and in industrial process".

Professor Elisa Moecke spoke about her studies on biodiesel, that had  result on the pilot plant built  by UNISUL on “Pinheira beach” in Palhoça, to transform waste oil into fuel for fishing boats. Prof.ª Ulrike Arens-Azevedo (HAW) presented the status of the research at the Faculty of Life Sciences in the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW).

The Seminar was facilitated by Prof. Baltazar de Andrade Guerra (JELARE/UNISUL). Professor Jucimara Roesler, Dean of UNISUL Virtual, closed the seminar that was transmitted on-line and watched via internet by more than 300 people.
